Jesus, our Savior
Deuteronomy 21:22-23 "And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance."
Jesus took upon Himself, the curse that we were to bear. Since the fall of man in the garden, all our us have continued to sin and fall short of the glory of God. The only way to get to heaven is perfection, and every one of us has not made the standard.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.
When sin entered the world, the earth itself was cursed and brought forth thorns and thistles. (Genesis 3:17-18) Jesus literally and figuratively bore thorns upon his head. Our sin is the reason that Jesus had to come and be the perfect sacrifice in our place. There are many parallels between Adam and Christ, the more time I spend meditating the more comparisons I can adduce. Here are some of those parallels:
Adam sinned in a garden. (Genesis 3:6)
Christ beat temptation in a garden. (Luke 22:42)
Adam tasted death from a tree. (Genesis 2:17)
Christ tasted death on a tree. (1 Peter 2:24)
Adam hid from the face of God. (Genesis 3:10)
Christ begged God not to hide His face. (Matthew 27:46)
Adam blamed his bride. (Genesis 3:12)
Christ took the blame for His bride. (Ephesians 5:25)
Adam brought thorns and thistles. (Genesis 3:18)
Christ wore thorns and thistles. (Matthew 27:29)
Adam brought a curse. (Genesis 3:17)
Christ became a curse. (Galatians 3:13)
Galatians 3:13-14 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us - for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”- so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
I cannot imagine the pain and sorrow when the Father saw His only Son hanging on a cross... cursed, on a tree! May we grow in our appreciation for Christ becoming a curse for us.
